As long as you’re headed down here to Florida, you should read some books about Florida (and especially Florida weirdness). Hiassen’s fiction, of course, has its pleasures (he’s got a new kids’ book out called “Chomp”) as do the books of his followers. Those are the obvious choices. But you might also consider a new non-fiction book: “The Scent of Scandal,” about a bizarre orchid-smuggling case that led to criminal charges against a scientific institution in Sarasota. Strangest story I’ve ever covered.

I read Niven’s The Wishing Game this week, and I didn’t really find it sad. It was definitely awesome though and I’m going to be reading more of him. His style is so clean. I like his ideas best.

Have fun! Chances are, you’ll still know the kids’s names when you get back, you just may not remember which is which. Of course, I never remember which is which in our house either and I haven’t even been on a book tour this year (ever).
